Tiedetuubi: fun and factual science & technology

Tiedetuubi is a popular online-only science and technology publication in Finland. It has been covering science and technology since 2012 and has already published more than 5,000 articles. More stories and videos are published weekly.

The publication took a hiatus in 2019 – because of the other media work done by the team – but is now being revived. In 2025, it will become a full-service online science and technology media outlet targeting a Finnish-speaking audience.

Originally, Tiedetuubi was merely a hobby for its founders, Jari Mäkinen and Markus Hotakainen, but it has since grown to become a leading science and technology media in Finnish. It also acts as a science and technology (especially space-related) news agency, closely followed by colleagues in legacy media outlets.

In addition to Mäkinen (left in the photo) and Hotakainen (second from left), Jarmo Korteniemi (third from left) joined the team soon after, followed by Mari Heikkilä (right) in 2024.

All members of the team have a long history in science and technology reporting, science communication, and public outreach.

The site has had more than 52 million visits since 2016.

According to Google Analytics, the age group distribution is (was in 2019) as follows:

  • 18-24 years old: 4.75%

  • 25-34 years old: 23.44%

  • 35-44 years old: 33.72%

  • 45-54 years old: 17.05%

  • 55-64 years old: 11.56%

  • Over 65 years: 9.48%

The most active readers might be similar to the demographic of their Facebook likers: 54% are in the age category of 35-54 years (35-44 years old female: 13%, 35-44 years old male: 14%, 45-54 years old female: 13%, and 45-54 years old male: 14%).

Tiedetuubi received the 2018 Science Communication Prize from the Finnish Association of Science Editors and Journalists.
